Malachy Donoghue

Date of Birth: 9 September 1927

What do Knockcroghery, Ireland, Fairbanks, Alaska and Rockland County, New York, have in common? Roscommon County native Malachy Donoghue pounded a path through them all as he chased, cornered and lassoed the American Dream. Malachy died in September 2016, but lucky for us he had already seen to it that his incredible life story, a tale filled with adventure and triumph, was captured on paper. At the urging of his son, Michael, an English teacher in New York City, Malachy dictated his life story to his wife, Maureen, who typed up his tale. Michael Donoghue in early 2017 published the story as a book on Amazon and now, courtesy of Malachy Donoghue and his dedicated wife and son, we can all learn about “The Way It Was.” This book offers a fresh perspective, with a sense of timeliness and urgency, to the enduring saga of Irish-America and the manner in which Ireland and the U.S. maintain a bond that transcends any single ocean or family bloodline. Always pushing the envelope of adventure, Malachy as a young man worked the gold fields of Alaska. He later settled and raised a family in Rockland County, home to the third-largest St. Patrick’s Day parade in the U.S. Sure, we’ve all heard the story of the Irish immigrant who carved out a new life in America. By never forgetting “The Way It Was,” Malachy Donoghue shows us what it was like to be a real-life cowboy, conquering that next frontier, riding off into the sunset, and always keeping friends and family at the center of all that he accomplished.
