Sheamus Smith

Sheamus Smith was Ireland’s Film Censor (Director of Film & Video Classification) for 17 years. In that time he made radical changes that included replacing ‘censorship’ with ‘film classification‘. New certificates were introduced and the practice of banning and cutting films ended. He commenced his career as a photographer with the now-defunct Evening Press followed by a move to Canada where he studied film and television at the University of British Columbia. Moving on to Hollywood, he worked for Walt Disney Productions. In 1961 he joined the newly formed Telifis Eireann (RTE). He was appointed Managing Director of Ardmore Film Studios in 1975, he was successful in attracting major international film productions to Ireland and was instrumental in persuading the government to establish the Irish Film Board to create incentives for filmmaking in Ireland.
