Theo Dorgan

Theo Dorgan is a poet, prose writer, editor, translator, documentary scriptwriter, broadcaster, and sailor. Born in Cork, Dorgan has lived in Dublin for many years, leading a parallel life as an arts manager, which included spending 11 years as Director of Poetry Ireland/Eigse Eireann, the national poetry organisation. His poetry has been widely translated, most notably into Spanish (La hija de safo, Ediciones Hiperion) and Italian (La casa ai margini del mundo, Tratti Moby Dick). Among his awards is the 2010 Lawrence O'Shaughnessy Award for Irish Poetry (USA). His prose account of a transatlantic voyage under sail, Sailing For Home, was described by Nobel Prize winner Doris Lessing as "a book for everyone." The UK poet Laureate, Carol Ann Duffy, praised his new collection of poems, Greek, as "A vivid, sensual, technically brilliant new collection." His libretto, Jason and the Agronauts, set to music by Howard Goodall, was commissioned by the Royal Albert Hall, London (the first such commission ever for a text) and premiered in 2004. Theo Dorgan is a member of Aosdana.
