In 1756 Charles Smith published this pioneering study of Kerry, following a tour of the county which he had undertaken five years earlier. His book forms the earliest comprehensive account of the landscape, the antiquities, and the then prominent families of the county. It contains fascinating information about Kerry in the 18th Century, and it has continued to be quoted by historians of the county. Here the work is presented in a new, reader's edition. The most important elements of Smith's book have been retained, while the most relevant of his original footnotes have been incorporated into the main text. There are now extensive new notes, with biographical details for the people and factual information about the features which are mentioned throughout, and archaic words are also explained. An introduction, about the life of Charles Smith, also appears.
