The old adage still remains true - a parent should never bury their child. This book cannot have been an easy venture for John Bowman but one hopes it eased the grieving process in some small measure for both him and his wife. `Jonathan' is presented not so much as a hagiography but an anthology of a character told by those who knew him best. Most touching are the final eulogies by Eoghan Harris, Sinead O' Connor and Neil McCafferty. The book is beautifully presented with reproductions of much ephemera from his life and times. In essence we are left with the documentation of a life cut tragically short mid-tangent from infant-terrible to senior statesman. His intelligence, wit and moral compass are seriously missed and one suspects that he would have been one of the first to call high-jinx in these times of fiscal malfeasance. John Bowman's book stands as testimony to Plato's maxim that "An unexamined life is not worth living".
