An Unconsidered People grew from a chance meeting with an Irishwoman on holiday. We were in what used to be Yugoslavia, and on this occasion, we were taking a boat trip to Venice. Phyllis Izzard had left Ireland in the 1950’s and went in search of work in London – as so many other Irish people did in that bleak decade. Her story sparked a fascination with immigration that has lasted to this day. I interviewed widely, read widely and the result is a social history of a generation whose needs were not ever considered by the Irish State.
